How to study for a geography test
Whereabouts helps you learn where countries are, a few at a time, using spaced repetition.
Start with a quiz, then switch to learning
A quiz tests on every country in a random order. Quizzes are a decent way to measure what you know right now, but they're a very slow way to learn.
If you're trying to learn every country in Africa and you already know Egypt and South Africa very well, you don't need to be asked about those every time.
The main app is what I recommend for learning. It automatically adjusts what it asks based on what you know.
So feel free to take a quiz first, but be sure to click the button at the end to add those countries to your daily learning routine.
How much time do you have?
A few weeks
Use the main app. Do two sessions a day: one in the morning and one in the evening.
Feel free to take a full quiz every week or so, but you shouldn't need to.
A few days
Use the main app but also take a quiz once a day or so.
A quiz takes longer because it asks you everything, but that time difference is less important with just a few days before a test.
Tonight, for a test tomorrow
Take the quiz, then take it again.
Spaced repetition can't help much with so little time.
If you'd like to still know everything weeks from now, come back to the app after the test.
Two sessions a day, spaced apart
Spacing helps, especially for things you don't know well. Practicing once a day for 6 minutes per session will be less effective than practicing twice a day for 3 minutes per session.
Linking to one region
Want to save a link to a quiz on a specific region, or a link to the main app narrowed down to a specific region?
Pick your regions and the links you need will appear below. Click a link to copy it.
Pick at least one region to see its links.
Linking someone to your own list of countries
Need to study just specific countries that no quiz currently covers?
Make a custom quiz to pick exactly the countries you want. You can take a custom quiz yourself or share it with someone else.
Custom quizzes can also be studied in the main app with spaced repetition. Take the quiz, then click the “Practice” button on the results screen. That narrows the main app to those countries, the same way the region links above do.
Anyone you share the quiz link with can do this too. They don't need an account, and they don't need to be the person who built the quiz.
A few things this isn't
Whereabouts is free and there's nothing to buy. You also don't need an account, although an account saves your progress across browsers and devices, so I recommend making one.
If you've found Whereabouts useful you're welcome to donate to help me keep it running. Hosting costs me about $20/month and I spend a bit of my free time responding to feature requests and bug reports and updating the app each month, and I'll happily use donations as tea money.
